ECONOMY
We can do much more together
Janusz Piechociński, Deputy Prime Minister, Minister of Economy of the Republic  of Poland

Caspian Energy (CE): Mr. Piechociński, in your opinion, under which terms must the European energy union be created?

Janusz Piechociński, Deputy Prime Minister, Minister of Economy of the Republic  of Poland: The European energy union must be created on transparent and clear terms when no party ever refuses any directions of supply, when the energy security implies not only safe supplies and physical presence of oil and gas in the pipeline but also a predictable, sustainable and favorable price both for suppliers and consumers. Therefore, it is important to finalize the work concerning not only the Energy Union but also new initiatives of Europe in regard to such countries, as Azerbaijan, which have already invested big money in quite new gas pipelines. As we know, the Nabucco West project has failed whereas it was one of the priority investments of the European Commission. Moreover, the South Stream project has also been suspended. Considering the financial situation in Russia we do not expect new streams. Together with our partners we now have to build a system of both efficient use of energy and reduction of transportation costs. Speaking frankly, I cannot imagine that the European perception may fail to accept the gas pipeline (Southern Corridor) built by Azerbaijan as an important mechanism for our European security. It also concerns long-term, real and beneficial contracts.
