Marie-Pierre Gramaglia, Minister of Public Works, the Environment and Urban Development of the Principality of Monaco: Monaco is a city-state at the area of 2 square kilometers with the population of 37,000 residents and 55,000 employees, of which 40,000 are living outside the state. The Principality is a major economic pole for the entire region. It is also the city with international reputation, which is valued for its high standard of living. Encouraged by His Serene Highness Prince Albert II, the Government boosts a sustainable development of the Principality, which is based on four pillars: management of natural resources; implementation of the plan on energy and climate; activities in favor of an ecological city; involvement of the entire community of Monaco in activities. Much is being done in line with the policy for sustainable development of our country. In particular, a few examples can be cited in this regard: the promotional activity ‘High Environmental Quality’ (improving comfort and health of users) applied to public buildings, the development of renewable energy, and subsidies for environmentally sound transport. Saving the Mediterranean is also one of our priorities. The policy of environmental management of coastal resources carried out by the Principality relies on creation of two marine protected areas. Finally, the activities of the Principality in the field of environmental protection and healthcare include control over the quality of coastal waters, air quality, which is conducted in accordance with the recommendations and standards based on the European rules.
