Iran proposes establishment of free economic zones

A two-day international forum of governors from the Caspian littoral states opened on November 17 in Rasht, a city in Iran’s northern Gilan Province. During the event, Deputy Foreign Minister for Legal and International Affairs Kazem Gharibabadi stated that the creation of joint free economic zones among the Caspian countries is possible—an initiative he believes carries strategic potential capable of multiplying regional trade, investment, and industrial cooperation.

The Deputy Foreign Minister for Legal and International Affairs added: “The Caspian Sea is the world’s largest source of sturgeon, and its fisheries resources are fundamental to the region’s food security. This valuable resource requires scientific management, strict action against illegal fishing, and joint stock-restoration programs—none of which are achievable without coordinated efforts among the coastal provinces.”

The meeting is being held under the motto “The Caspian: A Bridge of Friendship and Regional Development” and pursues a range of objectives.
