Andrei Chibis, Governor of Murmansk Region and Chair of the State Council Commission on the “Northern Sea Route and the Arctic,” presented to President Vladimir Putin a comprehensive project for Arctic development and the creation of a Trans-Arctic transport corridor stretching from St. Petersburg to Vladivostok.
Currently, the Arctic region generates up to 10% of Russia’s GDP, despite being home to just 2% of the country’s population.
In March, at the International Forum “Arctic – Territory of Dialogue,” the President instructed the government, with the involvement of the state corporation Rosatom, VEB, and the relevant State Council commission, to approve by August 1 a financial, economic, and organizational model for the development of the Trans-Arctic transport corridor.
